The Radio Club

Hi - This is my first post on my new blog, never had one of these before, never 'twittered' and only occasionally facebook, anyway my new pal at the club, Adam has a blog and I've been following his exploits in QRP and astronomy with much interest as the XYL kindly got myeself a telescope for Christmas.

Last night was only my 2nd visit to the local Ham radio club, as I am looking to take the Foundation license, so that I can use this fine radio properly, even if it is only 10 watts, though talking with Adam, and from my own experience on 27 Mhz, thats often all the power you'll need.

So last night Pete had us two newbies calling CQ on 2m on a pre-arranged sked with some local hams, all good just about as I have called CQ many hundres of times over the years on 27 Mhz, though I had to take care and try and be, how can I put it, a little more 'Amatuer Radio' with my calling than I normally would be !

All good fun though, great bunch of guys, oh and next week we'll be let loose on HF rig apparently, BRING IT ON !!!

  1. Hello Paul,

I have just read my comments and saw a message from you there with the info on this fine blog. Your design was the same one I chose until PC4T designed one for me (way beyond my PC skills!).

The first thing you should do is add you URL here:
    http://www.google.com/addurl/

This gives you more "visibility" so I was told.

I have also put a link from my blog to yours, so that might give you a few more readers.

Nice looking shack, BTW! Your desk is similar to mine and if you look up M6KDX on QRZ.com I think you'll agree your shacks look similar.

I think you'll enjoy blogging. I love it and it has given me almost as much pleasure as the radio operating itself. After I worked PC4T I called PA1LS on 40M who was calling CQ. What a difference - he was running 300W and was a solid 59+20!!!!

Thanks for the signal report/comments on my signal. I was out walking Bradley and realized it was almost 1000 so hurried like hell to get on the radio.

BTW, have you given any thought to what callsign you might like and whether or not you are going to hand-print your QSLs or get a printer to do them for you? I can thoroughly recommend QSL Factory who did a splendid job of printing me a couple hundred cards.

    Bye for now, Adam

  2. Hi Adam,

Just had a look at M6KDX's shack, yes similar, I have the Watson 30 amp supply also (found another pic of his shack on Devonham - a site I've not seen before), is this the same Ian I spoke to last night on 2m ?

This desk unit was a £5 ebay bargain from a nice couple in Brixham, think they were a little gutted it didnt go for more, the shack has changed a little, gone are 2 of my multimode cb radio's, so only the one a Superstar 360, the Icom 735 HF rig went a while ago, also have a Yupi wideband scanner and a base pmr 446 radio, never used though.

What frequency is the 2m calling channel, is it 144.500 or 145.500 or neither as have the scanner listening currently ?!

Callsign - I used to have a BMW M3 with an M3 plate on it, but Martin told me all the M3 calls have been allocated, so it's M6...not sure QRP..? probably taken.

I will take a look at QSL factory, I have loads of old qsl's in the loft from the last cycle on 27 Mhz, so cant wait to get DX'ing again this time on a HAM band, it's doing my nut in listening, I was so envious listening to you today, I wanted to give Paul a shout !

I have linked to google as you suggested, BTW there was an 'M' class solar flare today, appently the first of this cycle 24, what this will do, if anything, with regards to propogation I'm not sure.

    Cheers
    Paul.

PS - M6KDX - Yes it was the same Ian, I remember now !! I liked his 'DX' call.

  3. Hallo Paul,

The 2m calling frequency for FM is 145.5. I gave Eddy MØEDY a shout tonight but he must have been watching Corrie! M6OJE (Andy) was there too calling Keith (MØPAW).

144.300 is the SSB calling frequency.

Keep up with the blog. Atleast you know I shall be reading it! Try and put a flag counter on it and you can see where your visitors are coming from. You'll get the link (I think) if you click on the flag counter on my blog page.

I have had almost 100 NEW readers from the USA since Xmas. You'll find when you are QRV and on QRZ.com and post regularly you'll get tonnes of hits.

Signing off for the night now as 40m is dead and I can't get on 80. It has been the same all winter with 40 being dead during the night so I shall have to do something about getting on 80 next winter to fill up my long evenings. Perhaps a longwire alongside the Par if they don't interfere with each other.

    Adam
