A day out at sea.

Today the XYL had the day off, so we decided to take a boat trip to Dartmouth via Brixham, I also thought I might be able to do some 2m radio, however checking the license schedule only a full UK license holder can operate maritime mobile.

This fantastic boat was built in 1941 and used in the WW2 operating as a Rescue Motor Launch (RML) ship off Portland Bill, she has also done antisubmarine towing duties, she also served as a passenger ferry under the name of the Western lady III between 1947 and 2007, however she was recently found rotting in Poole harbour and was bought and restored by the Greenway ferry Company and now can carry up to 175 passengers and is 112' in length.

  1. Hello Paul,

Lovely looking boat and what a great day for boating: warm, cool breeze, calm sea. Quite a lot of fog around this afternoon. Hope you had a great day out. I seem to think you are allowed on "inland waterways" so wonder if you could tx on the river part of that trip? Bet that would delight your GL! 73 mate from M6RDP Adam

  3. Morning Paul,

Thanks for the comments on my Spanish event station entry. And thanks for the offer of the SLA battery. I am determined to try and lighten the load this summer: imagine an 817, a light-weight SLA battery and the Wonder Wand antenna, all light enough to throw into your rucksack and set up on Meadfoot beach with Bradley jumping around in the waves! That's my idea of paradise (or at least it's pretty close!). See you tomorrow in Paignton.

    Bye for now,

    Adam (M6RDP)

  4. Hi Paul, yes it was a lot of fun, apart from when we hit some thick fog near dartmouth, once we saw land I couldnt help but shout 'LAND AHOY' !!

Hi Adam, I have found another battery you can have for keeps, it's a 12v 2.4A/Hr, the one I used was 17A/hr, and maybe too big, I can bring it tomorrow or club Monday ?

  5. Hi Paul,
Its a great area and looks like you had much better weather than we had when we stayed in Brixham a few weeks ago! Never been so darn cold!

  6. Hi James, It turned really quite cold coming into Dartmouth, we later heard that Torquay and Totnes were in blazing sunshine, the weather can be a little like that round here, sorry you had it not so good.

I didnt hear your mobile James when you were down here, did you have a radio or non-radio friendly XYL/family perhaps ??

    73 Paul.

  7. Hi, I was thinking about this post today, where im going to be living in the city of Plymouth, I will be crossing the River a few times between Plymouth and Torpoint, does the ferry stop me being a M3 from operating on board? or technically is it ok?
