Multiple PSK signals changing frequency, opinions/explanations ???

I have just witnessed the strangest thing, listening on 7160 to the WAB (Worked All Britain) net when a load of 5/9+ PSK signals just appeared on the frequency, and then a few seconds later went away.

This happened a few times, it wasnt just a rogue station, at first I thought it was someone fooling around, but no when I checked the waterfall, it was numerous signals.

Here is a screenshot of PSK reporter, hopefully you can see my call and the frequency, and the stations recieved, just click on it to enlarge.

UPDATE - This was really so strange that I ran downstairs and picked up a camera and made a video, hopefully it shows what I am trying to say, please I would dearly love some comment on this.

  1. Hi Paul, yes, very strange... I never read about it. I just checked the band but I didn't hear any psk signal. 73 Paul

  2. Hi Paul, 40m right now is very quiet, but earlier on 7035 was S9+, and then all but one signal moved to 7160, I was switching VFO's as it happened. You can see on the reporter that I was on 7160.

  3. Hello Paul, did you actually recieve single signals on 7160 or did those stations appear on both frequencies? I only experienced such a event on the 11 Mtr band in my previous QTH. I had a CB station with a big amp in the same street. When he was transmitting I could hear stations jumping from for instance channel 2 right to channel 35. Seems to be sort of intermodulation. 73, Bas

  4. Hi Bas, the signals migtrated from 7035 to 7160, talking locally one suggestion was a group of operators just trying another frequency with no regard to the bandplan.

I have had wat you are saying, two big signals mixing then appearing on another frequency, for that to happen you would need the original psk signals on 7035, which was not the case.

I also emailed G0BFJ who was the net controller on 7160 and he suggested I could email the hams I heard, as I have their call's and see if they know anything.

  5. Of the 6 signals received, only 3 are listed on QRZ.com, I am going to email one of the Russian stations and see what response I get, problem is now this happened 24 hours ago and PSK reporter can only show back 24 hrs, I have managed to get a screen shot though of 1 station showing his call and the frequency of 7160.

  6. I received an email back this morning, and the Russian operator told me he was using PSK31 at the time but on 20m !

  7. Paul, I'd say some plonker had recorded the psk31 frequency and was playing it back, just to make a nuisance of himself. This has been happening with recordings of SSB ops calling CQ, someone thinks it's funny to retransmit those calls in the CW slot or the DX windows.

Thanks for the PSK31 contact earlier.

  8. I'd also suggest deliberate QRM - someone recording the PSK signals and playing them back on the SSB frequency. Some folks get a kick out of that kind of thing.

    Nice rig the 480! :-)

    All the best, Dean
