10m open last night.

Went along to the radio Club last night, and after a discussion about trying to contact a station in Central Africa on 12m, I ws asked if I've had any luck on 10m.

Weeks ago, yes, a couple of PSK31 contacts into S.America, but nothing since, in fact I said I am yet to make a voice contact on 10m, and would dearly love to having been an 11m op in my past radio life.

Anyway the club finished and I switch on the radio in the truck, to hear a very good 5/9 EA8CDI, Luiz in the Canary Islands calling CQ, not one to miss out I call back and am instantly acknowledged, despite a mini pile-up.

We continued to have a conversation as I drove home, he was never less than 5/7, with him 5/9+ at home, though gone about 15 mins later at 22.00 BST, looked like the propogation just went suddenly.

Absolutely chuffed to have made this contact.

  1. Hi Paul well it just goes to show you how strange 10m is. Just tune around and you would think that it is dead but in lots of cases putting a call out proves you wrong, great band and one to always keep your eye on.

See you have the same rig as me TS480sat very pleased with my one and maybe next time we meet you can tell me how you have your PSK configured.

It was great to meet you last night after all this time, what a small world it is

  2. Hi Ken,

Yes it is indeed a small world, and likewise Ken !

You can make your own leads for the data audio, however I got mine from eBay if I remember, I have got 2 leads, one for the CAT control, I use Ham Radio Deluxe and a lead for the audio i/o.

I'll have a look on ebay and send you some links.

I only use an old laptop with a serial port, as the leads a bit cheaper than a USB lead for the audio.

  3. Great to read you made at least one qso on 10m. It is my favourite band as well. I guess because of the same reason. Though you will see that many times the 10m SSB band is quiet when propagation is reasonable on 11m. I just take a view in my logbook and most of the 10m action was in July. So we have a couple of months to go...73, Bas

  4. Hi there Paul and hams.

The pleasure was mine to share a good time with you.
My location helps me a lot concerning dx on hf bands, instead surrounded by salt water I live above the clouds... 1100m/3600f.
Conditions has been quite good for a long time on 10m, on a daily-basis at evening time, I have plenty of PY, YY, ZP, CE, CX and other’s. After no more news coming from South America, sometimes I hear ZL (long path) and VK (short path, in both case antenna pointing 240SW) on lower part of the band CQ’ing CW. I miss out more A1A over 10m. It’s not that common to hear anyone from Europe far or near!
    Working conditions: TS950SD + A3S + TL922 400Wpep
I consider as well that if I relocate my equipments at any place by sea level, I’ll notice the difference.
In answer to PE4BAS, Bas, that has observed propagation on 11, but not in 10. I guide myself on 11m conditions before swapping to 10. Why? Quite simple, there are so many CBs over there and they are all close together, using their much reduced portion of the band, so it’s easy listening.
Hope and can work each other many more times. I’m a 10m big fun. And off-course thanks you very much for creating this site. It’s nice to know and so easy to feel when someone else is enjoying over the band! That’s all about.
    73, enjoy the hobby!
    Luiz, EA8CDI

  5. Hello Paul,
I got a email warning last night about the sporadic-e on 6 meter. I was QRV on 2 meter with WSPR. I was on the wrong band at the wrong time. ;-) The coming months will be fine for Sporadic-E refections on 10, 6 and 2 meter. Have fun!

  7. Thanks for all the comments, I can see that 10m is the hot topic !

Hi Bas - Yes you are right, it is for the same reasons, when I was an 11m operator, the 10m band was a place you just did not go to, for obvious reasons, and now I can !

Hi Luiz - very envious my friend, but very happy for you also, sounds like you have a great location and working conditions, also it was nice to hear a European calling for other European's instead of the usual DX or Stateside, we appreciate the conversation here in the UK just as much, if not more than the DX.

Hi Peter - I have 28500 set up as a memory in the mobile and the same on HRD in the shack, also if you dont already have a listen on 27.555 or anywhere around 27000-27500 FM/AM as per Bas and Luiz suggest.

  8. Sorry nearly forgot Paul, PC4T, as I had scrolled down too far, do you use a DX cluster, I am always looking out for any 6m activity, when I do see it posted it's usually inter-same country..
